Coaching

Coaching in the Grand National Archery Society takes place in an extensive variety of ways, ranging from the National Squads, in which archers of international potential are prepared to represent the U.K., through to beginners courses at club level.

The national coaching structure is sustained by a small army of qualified leaders and coaches with qualifications achieved through the GNAS coach training and examination system.

Coaching through the County Association is led by the County Coaching Group to which all qualified coaches and leaders affiliated to GNAS belong.

The Group meets regularly and the details of its meetings are shown on the Calendar page

Level 1 Coaching Course in Essex - Information provided by John Neal of the Essex Association - please address any enquiries directly to him.

The next Level 1 Coach Course starts this Autumn with the formal tuition phase consisting of three one day sessions at the Deanes Sports Centre in Thundersley, Essex (Map).

Dates for these for the Autumn course are 30th Sept, 21st Oct and 28th Oct 2007.

The course is open to all GNAS members and consists of a period of formal tuition (25hrs over three days) followed by a period of supported practice in your own club and under the guidance of a mentor of your choice. When you and your mentor feel you are ready, you can request your internal assessment which will be conducted by the course tutors. Finally you will be assessed by an external assessor and you must complete all your assessments within one year of the start of the course.

Assessment is carried out by observing you teaching beginners in a real coaching session which you will schedule. This need not be a formal beginners course - it could be a one off lesson you run for a couple of your friends or family. You will have to be seen teaching both an adult and a junior and teaching both barebow and Olympic styles.

The cost of the course will be £95 (includes cost of Level 1 course manual)

If you are interested in a place on the course, contact John Neal or Sandra Neal or you can download the application form here.

Please send applications as soon as possible so that we can get relevant paperwork to you in time for the course.

Further details of the course -

Level 1 is the entry level coaching qualification for archers wishing to train as Coaches and the course aims to equip coaches with the skills to -
In addition the course provides a background to coaches in the following -

The course lays the foundations of being able to teach a good basic style of archery to those new to the sport. Subsequently coaches have the opportunity to develop their coaching skills and knowledge further through participation in a Level 2 course. This extends technical knowledge both in depth and breath - it covers compound bows and longbow, develops the coaches skills in observation & analysis and provides training in how to use these skills to improve the performance of archers. Holding a Level 1 qualification is a prerequisite for attending a Level 2 course.

Subject: Archery - GNAS Coaching Conference 2007

I have attached the invite letter and booking form for the Conference to be held 9-11 November 2007.  There are two copies of the form.  One is fillable on screen, which can be printed and saved.  The other can be printed and filled in using the old fashioned pen.

if you have a problem with opening the fillable form (there have been reports that the new Vista operating system displays a message about the form having been changed), try the web site form; as a last resort use the non fillable version.  If you are unable to open attachments, the documents are on the GNAS Web Site.

Remember to send a completed form to me with your cheque by post.

I have tried to include everybody on my email list, but if you know of any coach who has not received either a letter or email from me, please feel free to pass this on.

Regards

Alastair
